What to Look for When Buying Your Dog Collars and Leads, Should You Go for a Specialist Type Dog Collar or Designer Dog Collars for Your Dog by Matthew Heini Clark
When purchasing dog collars and leads for our dogs we should to ask ourselves are we going to go for utilitarian designs or for designer dog collars. Often this depends on the type of dog we have and sometimes it will depend on the depth of our wallets, however designer style dog collars can be purchased without a big designer price label.
But be aware that whatever style dog collar you choose it can vary in size between manufacturers. So fit every new collar as if it was your dog’s first one. Always make sure you can fit either one or two fingers under it, depending on the breed of your dog. If you are a bit nervous about how to measure your dog for a collar then ask your vet or the staff in the pet shop they will be happy to help.
There are some large names in the fashion world that also design fabulous dog collars in high quality fabrics and metal, some are even fitted with everything from spikes to real jewels. The patterns can be paws, stars and stripes, holiday themes for Halloween and Christmas, a wedding or to draw attention to health awareness programmes. There is a huge choice available to suit everyone and every price range. The old traditional leather rolled or flat collars, fitted with a metal buckle are still very popular and come in lots of stylish designs and are also comfortable for your dog.
Another consideration to think about when purchasing your next dog collar is safety while walking your dog at night especially if you live in the country where the street lighting might not be that good. Some collars are reflective and they glow brightly when the lights from a van shine on it. Some collars have an actual light attached to them which gives off a constant light or it can be changes to flashing on and off mode.
Yet another type is the break away or quick release collars which stop a dog from getting strangled by enabling him to get free if he gets caught or snagged in undergrowth, fences or with another dog, this design is particularly good if your dog likes running through the undergrowth at high speed!!
The choke chain or slip collar has rings on either end which form a loop round your dog’s neck. A lead is then attached at the back of the dog’s neck. This design of collar and lead needs to be used with care and is not a good collar for a beginner as it can hurt or even strangle a dog if fitted or used inappropriately. Always supervise your dog if he is using a choke chain.
